Between The Deliverance from Error and Discourse on the Method
(A Comparative Study and Textual Analysis)

This study aims to conduct a comparative analytical examination of "Deliverance from Error" by Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali and "Discourse on the Method" by René Descartes, not only to explore the influence of Islamic philosophy on the French philosopher but also to investigate the possibility of his direct textual borrowing from Al-Ghazali’s work. The research employs a detailed textual comparison, analyzing the phrasing, examples, and methods of argumentation used by both philosophers to determine whether the similarities indicate mere intellectual inspiration or direct methodological transmission. Additionally, the study examines historical and linguistic evidence that might support the hypothesis that Descartes had direct access to Al-Ghazali’s work, within the broader context of cultural exchanges between Islamic and European civilizations during the Renaissance. The research highlights the role of Islamic philosophy in shaping Western philosophical thought and reevaluates the concepts of influence and textual borrowing between East and West.
